AI Is a Great Tool. But Who Is in Control ?

AI Is a Great Tool. But Who Is in Control ?

I've read a lot today about AI that acts before you ask. AI agents that don't just answer questions, but make decisions, take actions and execute tasks on their own, without waiting for human approval. And this is not a sales pitch. I am really worried. Letting AI go on its own is probably fine for planning the office party or the next fishing trip. Not fine when decisions touch client data, personal data, financial regulations or your core business. And yet that's exactly where people are plugging it in, without a second thought. The problem isn't AI. It's the naivety about where the barriers should be, and the fact that nobody in the room thought about who gets to see a decision before it becomes real. The more critical thinking we give up, and the more decisions we hand over to AI, the harder and more expensive the fall will be the day we realise it doesn't hold up all the way. At Flowen, AI will never be allowed to run operations. AI is a great tool, always. Humans stay in control, always. Making AI the master is, in our view, highly irresponsible. And by the way, this image was generated by AI. A perfect task for AI. Managing client data is not.

Building software is getting easier. Making it all work together is the real challenge.

Building software is getting easier. Making it all work together is the real challenge.

One platform. Your workflows. Your way of working. AI and modern development tools are changing how software is built. Creating new applications and features is becoming faster and more accessible. But building software is only part of the challenge. The real value lies in bringing together user experience, business processes, communication, integrations and security — without creating yet another isolated system.

What does slow food have to do with coding?

What does slow food have to do with coding?

At Flowen, AI writes the code — fast. But nothing reaches production until a human has read every line and tested it. Then it's done. AI helped cook it, but it can't slip back into the kitchen and change the recipe once it's served. Slow coding isn't slow output. It's care before it reaches the customer. More demanding, yes — like slow food. But what comes out is something you can trust, that lasts, and that doesn't surprise you later. Why should you consider it? Because you can't guarantee what you don't understand. Because the code you ship is the code you're responsible for. And because when the hype cools and the AI bills climb, the thing you cooked with care is the thing still standing. Fast food fills you up. Slow food is what you remember.

AI stays at arm's length from production — by design

Should we pause AI? No — but we should stop letting it drive. Some of the world's leading AI companies now say society may need the option to slow down or pause the development of the most advanced AI systems. It is a serious discussion. But if you build real products for real customers, that is not your question. Your question is simpler: how close should you let AI get? "At arm's length" is a principle borrowed from politics, culture and governance — a way to allow influence without control, and support without dependency. Applied to AI, it means one thing: use its power, but never let it dictate. AI is not the problem. The problem starts when AI becomes the part your product cannot run without. Used as a tool, AI is powerful. Used as the driver, it is a risk. The first risk: dependency Many companies now build products where AI sits inside the core of the system. The product depends on the model to work. So ask yourself: what happens if the model has an outage? If the provider changes the terms? If access is cut off? If the model simply gives a bad answer? If your product stops when AI stops, that is not control. That is dependency. The second risk: lock-in There is a second risk most companies do not price in early enough: cost and lock-in. AI agents do not make one simple call. They reason, call tools, check themselves and run again. One task becomes many model calls. So even when token prices fall, your total AI bill keeps rising. And if your core product runs on AI — what happens when the cost doubles? Can you switch providers? Can you self-host? Can you turn it off? Or is there nothing underneath to fall back on? The real negotiating power is the ability to walk away. Want to know how dependent you really are? Run the test. Turn off every AI API in your product and watch what happens. Most products stop. There is nothing underneath to keep them running. Flowen keeps running. Here is why. How we build Flowen At Flowen, we use AI every day — to code, to analyse, to move faster. But we keep it at arm's length from the core. Humans review and approve every line before it reaches production. AI helps us build Flowen. AI does not run Flowen. In production, AI is only a thin layer on top — limited support features like the chatbot, never the system itself. So when we switch off every AI connection, Flowen runs business as usual. Quotes, orders, projects, purchasing, delivery notes, WMS, invoicing — all of it keeps working. That is the difference. Control is architecture Control is not something you add later. You build it in from the start. For us, that means: - AI can support development, but never control production. - Humans stay responsible for the decisions that matter. - Core business flows must work without AI. - Customer data stays protected and in the EU. - The product must survive if a provider changes price, terms or access. We are not against AI. We use it openly and often. We are simply not willing to lose the ability to say no to it. That is what arm's length means: cooperation, not surrender.

Smarter meeting recordings. EU-based. Privacy-first.

Smarter meeting recordings. EU-based. Privacy-first.

When we built Flowen Meet, we made a choice. Flowen Meet runs on a fully European stack. Audio is captured in the browser and processed by our own self-hosted transcription service. The transcript goes to Mistral, a French AI lab, for summaries and action items. The user reviews everything before it gets published. Storage is on OVH in France, with backup on Hetzner in Germany. The European options exist. They're not exotic, they're not experimental, they're not slow. Mistral is a world-class model. OVH and Hetzner are mature infrastructure providers. The pieces are all there. But is it good enough? That's for you to try. Give it a go.

Flowen Analytics

Flowen Analytics

Most analytics setups today are heavy. Google Analytics, Tag Manager, third-party trackers — all layered on top of each other. That slows your site down. Makes compliance harder. And puts your data somewhere you do not really control. We built Flowen Analytics differently. Built into Flowen. Running on EU servers. Showing actual website activity without the usual bloat. Less noise. Less complexity. More control. Flowen Analytics. Data shown from one of our sites: Industrinät, last 30 days.

Partnership, Not Dependency

Partnership, Not Dependency

Schibsted just signed a deal with OpenAI. Good or bad? It depends. A good partnership: both sides benefit, terms are public, you can leave. A bad dependency: one side has all the power, terms are hidden, you're stuck. We don't know which one this is. That's the problem. Most European companies run on American software, cloud, and AI. Fine — as long as it's a choice. When there are no alternatives, it's not a choice. It's a dependency. That's why we built Flowen — EU-hosted, Mistral AI, one platform instead of 14 tools. Not anti-American. Pro-choice. — Daniel Olsson, Founder of Flowen
